Signbox Microsystems, a leading provider of digital signage solutions to the Asia Pacific and the Middle East, announced today in Singapore that its industry-leading signManager digital signage network platform would now support the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) standard.
SMIL (pronounced “smile”) is an open-standard, XML-based text file format created by the World-Wide Web Consortium and used to schedule and synchronise images, video, audio and text in basic digital signage networks.
Signbox will continue to use its proprietary signManager program and network communication language which supports sophisticated functions like queueing system integration, facial recognition, RFID communication, barcode readers and full touchscreen support, but will now also add support for SMIL as an added benefit, and major complement, of the existing system.
SMIL screens are often used to display more simple or static information like door signs, E-posters, and other, less frequently changing information. With the Signbox system, users can now deploy a cost-effective mix of both full-capability PC-based players alongside SMIL players on the same network.
